Sulbactam

Uses of Sulbactam

  • Sulbactam, when combined with other antibacterial agents is primarily used for managing various bacterial infections. It belongs to the class of beta-lactamase inhibitors.

  • It is effectively utilised in treating conditions like intra-abdominal infections, respiratory tract infections including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, among others.

Side effects of Sulbactam

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Pain or inflammation at the injection site
  • Allergic reactions (like rash, itching, or hives)

How Sulbactam works

  • Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor.

  • It works by permanently deactivating beta-lactamase enzymes that typically break down antibiotics, allowing the antibiotics to remain effective, and it also has inherent antibacterial activity against Acinetobacter species. This means it doesn't just defend antibiotics but directly fights against bacteria.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • The medicine is typically prescribed for adults and children above a certain age, which your doctor will determine based on your child's weight and the severity of the infection.

Contraindications

  • If you have had severe allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics in the past, you should not take Sulbactam.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Sulbactam may interact with anticoagulants (e.g., heparin, warfarin), antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin), allergy medications (e.g., chlorpheniramine, ginkgo), and oral contraceptives (like ethinylestradiol, levonorgestrel).

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • If you miss a dose of Sulbactam and it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects of Sulbactam are temporary and usually go away once you stop taking the medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or if your symptoms become worse, please consult your doctor.
