Ranitidine

ANTACID

Uses of Ranitidine

  • Ranitidine is used to manage indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), which is when you frequently experience acid reflux.
  • It also helps prevent and treat peptic ulcers, which are ulcers in the stomach or duodenum. Additionally, Ranitidine is used to address conditions like Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and to treat scleroderma esophagitis.

Side effects of Ranitidine

  • Dizziness, light-headedness or drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting
  • Sexual problems
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Abdominal pain
  • Blurred vision.

How Ranitidine works

  • Ranitidine operates through a mechanism of action that involves inhibiting the histamine H2 receptors, which are found on the surface of stomach cells. As a competitive antagonist, ranitidine selectively blocks these receptors, specifically those of the parietal cells in the gastric mucosa. By doing so, ranitidine curtails the binding of histamine to these receptors, which would otherwise stimulate the secretion of gastric acid. The reduction in histamine-mediated stimulation results in decreased gastric acid production, leading to lower acidity levels in the stomach. This acid-suppressing effect is particularly beneficial in the treatment and prevention of peptic ulcers, reflux, heartburn, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, and scleroderma esophagitis. By moderating acid secretion, ranitidine alleviates symptoms associated with various gastrointestinal conditions and supports the healing of ulcers.
