Pantoprazole

ANTACID

Uses of Pantoprazole

  • Pantoprazole is used to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
  • It reduces stomach acid production, alleviating symptoms like heartburn, acid reflux, and esophageal irritation.
  • It is also used in treating duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers.

Side effects of Pantoprazole

The side effects of Pantoprazole are:

  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

How Pantoprazole works

Pantoprazole is  classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) . Here’s Pantoprazole’s mechanism of action:

  • Pantoprazole targets and inhibits the proton pumps (H+/K+ ATPase enzymes) located in the gastric parietal cells of the stomach lining.
  • By inhibiting these pumps, pantoprazole significantly reduces the production of stomach acid.
By decreasing the amount of acid produced, pantoprazole alleviates symptoms associated with excess stomach acid, such as heartburn and acid reflux.
  • It also helps in healing damage caused by acid, such as in cases of GERD, ulcers, and esophagitis.
  • By reducing stomach acid, pantoprazole promotes the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers and helps in managing conditions like GERD and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where excessive acid production is a problem.
