Uses of Magnesium Sulphate

  • Magnesium Sulfate is primarily used to treat and prevent low blood magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), and it belongs to mineral supplements and electrolyte group of medicines.
  • Additionally, it is indicated for managing seizures associated with eclampsia and pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, short-term treatment of constipation, managing certain irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) in emergency settings, and occasionally as an adjunct therapy for managing acute severe asthma attacks.

Contraindications

  • Magnesium Sulfate is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to magnesium or sulphate.
  • It is also not recommended for patients with known heart block unless a pacemaker is in place.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Magnesium Sulfate may interact with antibiotics such as tetracyclines (like doxycycline, minocycline), quinolones (like ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin), nitrofuran (like nitrofurazone, nitrofurantoin), bisphosphonates (like alendronate, ibandronate), calcium channel blockers (like amlodipine, nifedipine ), diuretics (like furosemide, torsemide) and cardiac glycosides (such as digoxin).

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • An overdose of Magnesium Sulfate may lead to symptoms of hypermagnesemia such as flushing, decreased heart rate, drowsiness, vomiting, and low blood pressure. If you observe these symptoms, inform your doctor immediately.
  • If you forget to take this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing Magnesium Sulfate. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

  • If you experience diarrhoea, try taking the medication with meals.
  • In case of nausea or vomiting, ensure that you stay hydrated by drinking enough fluids.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

  • Magnesium Sulfate may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you feel dizzy or sleepy after taking this medication.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Magnesium Sulfate is used in pregnancy under medical supervision for managing eclampsia. However, it should be used judiciously as it can cause fetal hypotonia and respiratory depression in neonates. Breastfeeding mothers should consult a doctor before using this medicine.

Caution in Other Conditions

  • Patients with renal impairment should exercise caution when taking Magnesium Sulfate due to the increased risk of toxicity.
  • Those with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis should also take this medicine cautiously due to the potential for increased muscle weakness.

  • Avoid prolonged periods of vomiting or diarrhoea that can lead to loss of magnesium from the body. If you are unable to control these conditions, seek medical help immediately.
