Ketoprofen

Uses of Ketoprofen

  • Ketoprofen is primarily used to manage mild to moderate pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis and menstrual cramps. It belongs to the class of medicines known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

  • Secondary uses of Ketoprofen include the management of ankylosing spondylitis, acute gout, tendinitis, and bursitis.

Side effects of Ketoprofen

  • Stomach upset

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Diarrhoea

  • Skin irritation (when using topical forms)

How Ketoprofen works

  • Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine.

  • It works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. By blocking the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), ketoprofen effectively reduces inflammation, relieves pain, and lowers fever.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Ketoprofen can be taken orally (tablet, capsule, extended-release tablet), topically (gel, cream, foam, ointment), intravenous and intramuscular (infusion) routes.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • Ketoprofen is meant for adults.

Contraindications

  • This medicine is contraindicated in patients with active peptic ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding.

  • It is also contraindicated in those who have experienced asthma attacks, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.

  • Patients with severe heart failure or significant renal impairment should avoid using this medicine.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Ketoprofen may interact with anticoagulants (eg., warfarin), ACE inhibitors (eg., lisinopril and enalapril), angiotensin receptor blockers (eg., losartan and valsartan), diuretics (eg., furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide), lithium, immunosuppressants (eg.,methotrexate, and cyclosporine).

OverDose and Missed Dose

  • An overdose of this medicine may lead to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain. Large overdoses of ketoprofen can lead to serious effects such as respiratory depression, coma, or convulsions. Although less common, gastrointestinal bleeding, hypotension, hypertension, and acute renal failure may also occur. If you suspect an overdose, consult a doctor immediately.

  • If you miss a dose of Ketoprofen, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

  • If experiencing stomach upset while taking oral forms of Ketoprofen, try taking it with food or milk.

  • Staying hydrated may help reduce the risk of kidney problems when taking this medication.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machines. Avoid these activities if you experience dizziness or drowsiness after taking this medicine.

Use in Pregnancy and lactation

  • This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation unless recommended by a healthcare professional. Consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

  • Patients with existing liver or kidney disease should use Ketoprofen with caution due to the increased risk of adverse effects in these conditions.

  • Individuals with a history of gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcers or bleeding should exercise caution while using this medicine.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • For individuals managing arthritis pain with Ketoprofen, maintaining a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, fatty fish (rich in omega-3 fatty acids), nuts, and seeds may help reduce inflammation levels.

  • Regular physical activity tailored to your condition can help improve joint function and reduce stiffness. Activities such as swimming or cycling can be beneficial without putting excessive stress on the joints.

  • Managing stress through techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises can also play a role in controlling symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions.

  • Ensure adequate hydration throughout the day as dehydration can exacerbate joint pain and potentially affect kidney function when taking NSAIDs like Ketoprofen.
