The main use of Eplerenone is to manage high blood pressure and heart failure, especially in patients who have suffered a recent heart attack. It belongs to the group of medicines known as mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs).
Additionally, it is used to improve survival in stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction ≤40%) and evidence of congestive heart failure after a recent heart attack.
High blood potassium levels (Hyperkalemia)
Dizziness
Headache
Digestive upset, including diarrhoea and nausea
Fatigue and flu-like symptoms
Eplerenone is a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist.
It works by blocking the action of a hormone called aldosterone, which usually acts on the kidneys to promote absorption of salt and water while causing the kidney to get rid of potassium. By blocking aldosterone, Eplerenone allows the kidneys to excrete more salt and water and retain more potassium.
