Dipyridamole

Uses of Dipyridamole

  • The main use of Dipyridamole is to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke. It belongs to the group of antiplatelet medicines.

  • Additionally, it is used in patients with prosthetic heart valves or those who have undergone cardiac surgery to prevent thromboembolism. It is also used in conjunction with aspirin for patients with a history of transient ischemic attack (TIA) or ischemic stroke and as an adjunct to warfarin therapy to prevent thrombosis.

How Dipyridamole works

  • Dipyridamole is an antiplatelet medication.

  • It works primarily by inhibiting adenosine reuptake, leading to an increase in extracellular adenosine levels. This results in the activation of adenosine receptors, which helps to inhibit platelet aggregation and vasodilation. Additionally, dipyridamole has vasodilatory effects by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase, leading to increased levels of cyclic AMP in platelets and endothelial cells, further contributing to its antiplatelet and vasodilatory actions.
