Contraindications

Other Medications to Avoid

• This combination may interact with medications like lithium, digoxin, and anti-arrhythmics (such as amiodarone and sotalol), affecting their toxicity. It may also reduce the effect of uricosuric medications like probenecid and increase potassium retention when used with potassium-sparing diuretics (such as spironolactone), ACE inhibitors (like lisinopril), or ARBs (such as losartan). Additionally, it can increase the risk of milk-alkali syndrome when taken with calcium supplements and absorbable antacids.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Overdosage of this combination may lead to symptoms such as confusion, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, irritability, twitching and tetany. If you observe any of these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.

• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to catch up.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this combination. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Taking the combination after meals can help manage gastrointestinal intolerances like abdominal discomfort, nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

• Drinking plenty of fluids can help manage side effects like gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• This combination does not typically affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience side effects like confusion, muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat, avoid such activities and consult your doctor.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The safety of Citric Acid + Potassium during pregnancy or lactation has not been fully established. Therefore, it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with renal impairment need to exercise caution when using Citric Acid + Potassium due to its effects on electrolyte balance and potential for altering kidney function.

• Individuals with heart conditions should also be cautious because of the potential for inducing hyperkalaemia.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Regularly check your body weight, as sudden weight gain may indicate water retention.

• Increase fluid intake to help dilute urine and prevent stone formation.

• Adopt a diet low in sodium and animal proteins while increasing intake of fruits and vegetables to help maintain an alkaline urine pH.

• Avoid foods high in oxalates, such as spinach, rhubarb, nuts, and tea, if prone to oxalate stones.
